It’s Cybersecurity Awareness Month and as an industry veteran, I love the opportunity it brings for all of us to share our messages with a broader audience. All month long AaDya will be doing our part by sharing tips and best-practices that we hope will make an impact.
As the founder of a company that is laser-focused on providing smart, simple, accessible and affordable cybersecurity solutions for small and midsize businesses (SMBs), I also wanted to take this opportunity to share with you our “why.”
SMBs are essential
More than 90% of the business population represents SMBs (Salesforce 2019). Rather than focus on the 10% that represent the enterprise, it makes sense to focus on serving a segment that represents the majority of our economy and workforce.
Several recent high-profile attacks making news in recent months have highlighted how SMB vulnerabilities can be exploited to put customer data and even our Nation’s infrastructure at risk.
SMBs make attractive targets
According to Verizon’s 2021 Data Breach Investigations Report, 43% of all data breaches involve SMBs, and 61% have reported at least one cyber attack during the previous year. When it comes to security, size really doesn’t matter. Hackers see SMBs as low hanging fruit and just because a business is small, doesn’t mean its data is any less valuable. SMBs can also serve as a back door to the larger enterprise customers they support.
SMBs are often resource constrained
The majority of SMBs lack the time, budget and human resources to implement, manage and afford the myriad number of point products needed to protect their digital assets 24/7. Even businesses with internal IT staff or that leverage managed IT services are often lacking when it comes to security expertise.
Security tied to revenue
More enterprise companies are requiring their suppliers and vendors to meet their own strict security standards, and the federal government is ramping up its efforts to ensure a secure supply chain. This is a trend that will continue. To remain competitive, SMBs must be prepared to demonstrate a strong security posture.
